On November 15, 2002, DOSECC began drilling holes for the installation of subsurface instrument packages, on the island of Montserrat in the British West Indies (CALIPSO Project) using the CS-500 rig. The equipment packages include a strainmeter, tilt meter and three-component seismometer, and are similar to the instruments installed at Mauna Loa for the US Geological Survey. They are also similar to the subsurface instrument packages proposed to be installed in areas of western North America as part of the Plate Boundary Observatory (PBO) component of the EarthScope Program.
