In September-October, 2003, DOSECC deployed our active heave compensated drilling rig (AHC800) on the R/V Knorr to core sites on the continental shelf off New Jersey as part of the Geoclutter Program of the Office of Naval Research. The targets of the drilling were filled channels as well as a regional seismic reflector, the "R" horizon. Three sites were cored: Site 1 (129 m water depth) sampled the outer shelf wedge, Site 2 (79 m water depth) penetrated a large filled channel (see seismic survey below), and Site 3 (75 m of water) sampled the "R" unconformity. The figure below shows a seismic section with drill hole superimposed at Site 2.
