Hybrid Coring System

a_Top_Drive1The DOSECC Hybrid Coring System (DHCS) is designed to collect continuous core to depths approaching 20,000 feet (6000 m). This unique diamond coring system is attached to a conventional rotary drill rig. The DHCS is hydraulically driven and uses modular components for its feed cylinder, rotating head, power pack, wireline winch and mud pumps. The rotating head has a dynamic capacity of 185,000 lbs. and is attached to a hydraulic feed cylinder that is hung from the traveling block of the rotary rig. This assembly is stabilized by floor to crown tensioned guide cables. During coring operations, standard wireline coring rods are used with a thin-kerf diamond bit that drills a nominal 4-inch hole and recovers core with a diameter of about 2.5 inches. The core barrel is retrieved by a wireline winch; an operation that allows the rods and coring assembly to remain at the bottom of the hole. The rotary rig is used in its standard configuration to open the hole, set casing, trip drill rods and perform cementing operations. During these operations, the DHCS is set back in the derrick, out of the way of other activities.

The DHCS is designed for ease of shipping and is packed into three 20 foot and one 40 foot shipping containers. It is suited for remote operations with the containers housing a workshop and a spare parts inventory. The system can be accommodated by a large variety of host rotary rigs.
