The CS-1500 coring rig that is part of the GLAD800 system has also been used for coring scientific drilling projects on land. The rig is capable of continuous coring to 1200 m using an HMCQ coring system. This is a very versatile rig that can be easily transported and set up in a relatively confined space.
The CS-1500 has been used to collect continuous core for the Ko'olau Scientific Drilling Project. It has also been used to install subsurface instrument packages consisting of a strainmeter and three-component seismometer for monitoring of hazards on Mauna Loa Volcano. The project was done under a contract with the U. S. Geological Survey.
The CS1500 was used on the USGS on the Hawaii Volcano Observatory (HVO) project, June to July 2000. Three holes were cored, with a total of 1,181 feet of core collected.
