The workshop will include presentations on international and multidisciplinary drilling projects and topics; a field trip to Moab, Utah is also planned. All geoscientists interested in using drilling as a tool are invited to apply via a short application letter to David Zur by May 2. Early application is encouraged. Limited funding is available for travel.

Noon: U of U vehicles available for boarding on lower level of the Cliff Lodge; box lunches given to those going on the field trip. Others are on their own for lunch.

Schedule for the afternoon:
Leave Snowbird around noon, stop at Thistle for 1/2 hour, stop at Gentile Wash for 2 hours, and add rest stops; be in Green River at 6 pm (or a little after) for dinner, in Moab by 9 pm.

Wednesday June 4:
Leave motel after breakfast at 8:30 a.m. Drive to Canyonlands Natl. Park. After 1-2 short overview stops, arrive at Upheaval Dome parking lot around 10 a.m. Walk to outlook (ca. 20 min) for an overview. Then take hike into crater interior, reach bottom around 1 p.m. Have lunch there. Walk around interior of structure for ca. 1 hour.
Start walk back up ca. 2:30 to 3 p.m., reach cards around 4:30 p.m. Drive back to Moab via Schaffer Trail Road, arrive in Moab ca. 6 p.m.

Thursday June 5:
Morning: Tuscher Canyon, and lunch in the canyon. Possible stop at Helper for a rest break.
Back at SLC airport at 5 p.m. or at hotel (Red Lion) for those who stay overnight.

Workshop Logistics

The Workshop will be held at the Cliff Lodge at Snowbird Ski and Summer Resort, Utah (40 minutes from SLC International Airport), www.snowbird.com

Accommodations

Participants will be housed in The Cliff Lodge at Snowbird. Accommodations include queen beds, small refrigerators, and internet access. Amenities include two outdoor heated year-round swimming pools, hot tubs, fitness center, laundry facilities, satellite-cable television, restaurants and lounges.

Nightly rates for single occupancy rooms are US$99 per person, plus $10/night Summer/Fall Resort Fee at the Cliff Lodge. this fee includes private club membership to the bars and lounges at Snowbird, access to the Cliff Spa (rooftop pool & hot tub, fitness facility, sauna, steam room, solarium, yoga classes), high-speed wireless internet in lodging rooms and public space, USA Today, in-room coffee (lobby coffee at Lodge), self parking plus free valet at the Cliff, 800 number phone calls, faxing and first 15 min. computer use in business center.

Airport Shuttle

The preferred method to book a shuttle from the airport to Snowbird is through the Snowbird Central Reservations Coordinator, Craig Thomas, at 801-947-8255, Fax: 801-947-8227, or Email: cthomas@snowbird.com. The shuttle operates from 6 a.m. to midnight.

Alcohol

Please note that alcohol will not be reimbursed. However, for those who choose to visit one of the bars at Snowbird, a temporary private club membership is included with your room. The “private club” is a quirky Utah thing which requires a membership to enter certain drinking establishments. No worries though, your temporary membership allows access to all establishments at Snowbird.

Applications

All interested participants (including DOSECC Member Institution Representatives) must apply via a short application letter to David Zur by May 2. This is being done to ensure maximum participation of interested scientists and ensure suitable funds for reimbursement. 

Internet Access

Free wireless internet is available throughout the Cliff Lodge.

Meals

A continental breakfast will be available in the meeting room at the Cliff Lodge on Monday and Tuesday, starting at 7:00 a.m. Lunches will be catered both days.

There will be a Welcoming Reception on Sunday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Details will be posted here as they become available.

Dinner on Monday night is on your own. Restaurants are located throughout Snowbird.

Parking

All participant parking (if needed) is free of charge; complimentary valet service is also available.

Program/Presentation of Talks

Lectures are scheduled to begin on Monday June 2 at 8:00 a.m. Details of the lecture program will be posted here as information becomes available; a copy of the schedule will also be available on Monday morning in the Magpie Room.

Lectures will be held in the Cliff Lodge at Snowbird; the exact room will be announced shortly. A PC computer for PowerPoint presentations, LCD projector, projection screen, podium and podium mic will be available. Speakers are encouraged to bring their presentations on a USB memory stick or CD ROM to download to the PC. To avoid incompatibility issues, Mac users are strongly encouraged to bring a PC-compatible version of their presentation, or ensure that it will work on a PC.

Reimbursement

Each participant should be prepared to cover all travel and subsistence expenses incurred during the workshop and field trip. DOSECC will reimburse reasonable and customary travel costs, including airfare, meals, and shuttle service from the airport to Snowbird. Expenses that will not be reimbursed include rental cars and alcohol. Expense reports must be accompanied by copies of all travel receipts; they cannot be processed without them. Participants who plan to request reimbursement of airfare to/from the conference should be aware that the National Science Foundation requires travel to be made on a U.S.-flag air carrier, or performed under a U.S.-flag carrier code-sharing agreement. There are very limited exceptions to this rule.

Reservations

The hotel reservation cut-off date is May 8th - reserve your room before this date!

Make your hotel reservations through the Snowbird Central Reservations line, 1-800-453-3000, or online at the Snowbird reservations page; the Group Code is DOSECC. Changes to your reservations must be made by calling Snowbird directly. People with disabilities should make special requirements clear.

Check-in and Checkout: The check-in desk at the Cliff Lodge at Snowbird will be staffed on a 24-hour basis. Check-in begins at 4:00 p.m. and is guaranteed by 6:00 p.m. Check-out time is 11:00 a.m.

Social Events

There will be morning and afternoon breaks featuring light refreshments. Registered participants are invited to attend a Welcome Reception on Sunday evening in the Cliff Lodge.

Weather

Normal daily temperatures at Snowbird in early June range from 42 to 63 degrees F. The average June rainfall is about one inch.

Field Trip Logistics

The field trip will be held in Moab and surrounding area, Utah. Bring appropriate clothing for temperatures between 53 and 98 degrees F, and appropriate footwear for moderate desert hiking.

Accommodations include a queen-size bed, fridge, microwave, direct dial phone with voice mail, free local calls, TV, and free high-speed internet connection. Amenities include an outdoor swimming pool and a 12-person hot tub. You need to contact David Zur for a room confirmation number prior to making your reservation. Do not make reservations on the River Canyon Lodge website, call the River Canyon Lodge directly toll-free at (866) 486-6738; the Group Code is DOSECC.

Alcohol

Travel

Travel from Snowbird to Moab will be via University of Utah vans. At the end of the trip, participants can choose to be dropped-off at the Salt Lake City airport, or a hotel near the airport (hotel information forthcoming). Due to the distance of the field trip from the SLC airport (~250 miles) and the fact that traffic and weather delays happen, you may wish to consider staying at a hotel near the airport and booking your return flight for the morning of June 6th.
